Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you want to know about getting your own AI assistant installed.

About OpenClaw

What is OpenClaw?

OpenClaw is open-source software that turns a dedicated computer into your personal AI assistant. It connects to powerful AI models like Claude (Anthropic) or ChatGPT (OpenAI) and lets you interact with them through messaging apps like Telegram or WhatsApp. Think of it as having your own AI that's always available, running on hardware you own.

Why would I want this instead of just using ChatGPT?

A few key reasons: (1) Always-on availability via your messaging apps — no need to open a browser, (2) Your conversations stay on your hardware, (3) Full customization of how the AI behaves and what it can access, (4) Integration with your files, calendar, and other tools, (5) No per-message limits — just pay for actual API usage.

Is this legal? Do I own the AI?

Completely legal! You're using official APIs from Anthropic or OpenAI and paying them directly. You own the hardware and control the software. The AI models themselves belong to their creators, but your conversations and data belong to you.

Hardware & Setup

What hardware do I get?

You receive a Mac Mini M2 — Apple's compact, powerful desktop computer. It's configured specifically for running OpenClaw 24/7 with everything pre-installed. The hardware is yours to keep.

Why a Mac Mini specifically?

Mac Minis are reliable, quiet, energy-efficient (about $3-5/month in power), and have excellent long-term support. They also integrate well with other Apple devices if you have them. The M2 chip provides plenty of power for AI assistant tasks.

What do I need to provide?

Just an internet connection (WiFi or Ethernet) and a power outlet. You'll also need to set up your own API keys with Anthropic or OpenAI (we guide you through this) and have a Telegram or WhatsApp account for messaging.

Where does the Mac Mini go?

Anywhere convenient! It just needs power and internet. Most people put it in a home office, near their router, or even in a closet. It's small (19.7cm square) and very quiet.

Do I need a monitor?

Not for normal use — you interact with the AI through your messaging apps. We connect a monitor during installation for setup and testing. For occasional maintenance, you can connect a monitor or use screen sharing.

Installation & Service

What happens on installation day?

Our technician arrives with your pre-configured Mac Mini. We: (1) Find the ideal location and connect everything, (2) Complete the setup and connect to your messaging apps, (3) Test thoroughly to ensure everything works, (4) Give you hands-on training, (5) Answer all your questions. It takes about 4-6 hours.

Where do you install?

We service all major New Zealand cities: Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga, and Dunedin. For other locations, we may be able to accommodate — just ask.

What's included in the 1 month coaching?

Weekly 30-minute video calls to: (1) Review how you're using your AI, (2) Troubleshoot any issues, (3) Share tips and tricks for getting more value, (4) Customize the setup based on your needs. Plus email/message support throughout the month.

What happens after the first month?

Your AI keeps working! You can continue independently, or opt for ongoing coaching at $500/month. Many clients do a few months of coaching, learn what they need, and then continue solo.

Pricing & Costs

What does the $5,000 package include?

Everything: Mac Mini M2 hardware (yours to keep), full day on-site installation, complete OpenClaw configuration, messaging integration (Telegram/WhatsApp), training session, and 1 month of follow-up coaching.

What are the ongoing costs?

Two main costs: (1) API usage — typically $20-50/month for normal use, paid directly to Anthropic or OpenAI, (2) Electricity — about $3-5/month. That's it! No subscription fees to us.

What's API usage?

When you chat with your AI, each message costs a tiny amount. A typical conversation might cost $0.01-0.10. Heavy users who send hundreds of messages daily might spend $50-100/month. Light users often spend under $20.

Can I use multiple AI providers?

Yes! OpenClaw can be configured to use Claude (Anthropic), ChatGPT (OpenAI), or both. Each has different strengths, and some people like switching based on the task.

Privacy & Security

Who can see my conversations?

Your conversations go from your messaging app to your Mac Mini to the AI provider (Anthropic or OpenAI). No one else has access. We don't store or monitor your chats.

Is this more private than using ChatGPT directly?

In some ways, yes. Your conversations aren't tied to a web browser account, and you have full control over your data. However, your messages are still processed by the AI provider's servers — that's how AI assistants work.

What data do you have access to?

During installation and coaching, we help configure your system but don't retain access afterward. You're in full control. If you need support later, you can grant temporary access.

Technical Questions

What if my internet goes down?

The AI won't be able to respond until internet is restored. The Mac Mini will automatically reconnect and resume working. Your message history is preserved.

Can it control my smart home devices?

OpenClaw can be extended to work with various smart home systems. This is custom configuration — let us know what you have and we can discuss possibilities.

Can multiple people in my household use it?

Yes! You can set up multiple Telegram/WhatsApp connections. Each person can have their own conversation with the AI. Great for families or small teams.

What if something breaks?

For hardware issues, the Mac Mini has a 1-year Apple warranty. For software issues, OpenClaw is regularly updated and we can help troubleshoot. Most issues are resolved with a simple restart.
